Inclusion is at the heart of International Women’s Day 2024 – and WifOR is showing why #InclusionMatters to us. From labor market researchers to HR managers, our experts explore where Gender Gaps persist and how inequalities can be tackled through inclusion. The campaign aims to raise awareness for existing disparities between men and women and contribute towards a fairer, more inclusive society.
#InclusionMatters: Gender Gaps and their Consequences
Pay, care, lifetime earnings: these are but a selection of Gender Gaps which continue to drive structural inequalities between men and women. In Germany, the Gender Pay Gap lies at 18% – the third highest among EU member states. As a result, the Lifetime Earnings Gap shows women earn on average approximately half as much as men over their entire careers. Meanwhile, a Gender Care Gap of 44% means women spend significantly more time doing unpaid work – a key factor behind the unequal distribution of work. The Social Impact of Diversity & Inclusion
Study after study demonstrates that Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) in a workplace fosters innovation and enhances employee retention. However, D&I managers often report challenges measuring the outcomes of these initiatives. In this context, a study from WifOR Institute and Novartis has examined the impact of D&I on employee well-being and productivity. Key findings show a positive correlation between diversity in Novartis’ workforce and all inclusion categories, such as empowerment, sense of belonging, and the opportunity to voice ideas. The study also finds employee well-being is improved, resulting in higher levels of employee engagement and retention – as well as reduced absenteeism. Well-being, innovation, productivity: a diverse company culture, rooted in fair and inclusive treatment, has the potential to deliver wide ranging benefits. But how can companies approach Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) and successfully integrate it in their structure? Our research identifies core measures an organization can take to effectively implement DEI – ranging from measuring diversity using key indicators to setting benchmarks for DEI targets and quantifying the impact these strategies have within the company and beyond into wider society. For more on the benefits, potential challenges, and practical tips on implementing DEI, read the article – which includes WifOR’s own Diversity Score.
